The Golden Ratio Overview
The golden ratio is a number built on the Fibonacci sequence. What happens when a sequence converges? If you remember back to your math class, you’ll know that infinite sequences of numbers can converge and steadily get closer to one specific number. Sometimes these sequences create numbers that go on forever and ever but you can locate the first digits.
That is what the golden ratio is. The Fibonacci sequence is its foundation. This is built by adding the sum of the previous two numbers together. For example, 1 + 1 = 2 then 2 + 1 = 3 and so on. It builds a sequence like…
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.
When this converges it makes an irrational number of 1.618…. Now we can take that number and build shapes to this ratio. That is the golden ratio.
Golden Ratio in Architecture
The golden ratio designed some of the most famous buildings in the world. Think about the Greeks. They build their Parthenon based on the golden ratio. It shows up in geometry everywhere. The pyramids in Egypt are built based on this ratio. Today modern buildings use the golden ratio to design minimalistic buildings based on the simplistic shapes of squares and rectangles. These use dimensions derived from the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence.
Golden Ratio in Nature
The next place that the golden ratio is found is in nature. This is God’s version of design by the golden ratio. He is the original creator of all numbers and design anyways. That means we can see how design is supposed to look. Looking at flowers we see that they are often broken up into petal counts that follow the golden ratio. In addition, when you consider the physical dimensions of plants like the sunflower they match that of the golden ratio. All of this to say that one of the greatest teachers in design, art, music and anything else will always be nature because the original designer is God.
