What are Vector Images in Tulsa Website Design

Let’s start by looking at what a vector image is.  Vector images are images that use a mathematical formula to inform the program used to display the image on how to render it to the screen.  Now that sounds complicated, but it is rather simple.  The image says, “I need to have a straight line here for this length with this color…” and so on.  The image just looks like an image in your browser, but in the background it is rendering on the fly.

The Benefits of a Vector Image

The primary benefit of this is that images won’t become pixelated as they grow in size.  Whether you need your image to be the size of your house or the size of a mouse, you can use the same vector photo to do it.

The second benefit is that they are generally smaller in size.  Vector images can be extremely small because in essence they are really storing text information.

The Drawbacks of Vector Images

Vectors cannot be complex.  You can do a lot of crazy things with vector images, but at the end of the day they aren’t a picture.  You can’t simply grab your camera, walk outside with your phone, take a photo and convert it into a vector image.

When to Use Vector Images

Use vector images on simple objects that have to be used with versatility.  Think about a logo or icon.  Things that you need to use in multiple different ways.

What are Raster Images

Raster images are the opposite of vector images.  These images are built on a pixel grid.  The easiest way to see this is to open a photo in photoshop, zoom all the way in and you will start to see the grid.

You never see this grid of pixels when the image is at its normal size, but as you zoom in you start to see it.  These images are what you take with your camera.  They are detailed and can be extremely complex.

The Benefits of a Raster Image

The primary benefit is the ability to have realistic and complex images.  These images are like what you see with your own eyes (maybe).

The Drawbacks of Raster Images

Raster images cannot scale up and down which means that if you have a really small image and want it to go on the side of your business, it won’t work.

When to Use Raster Images

Raster images are great for art or things that add beauty, but aren’t going to be used in a lot of different places.  You don’t want to make your logo a raster image because when you try to put it on a business card, you won’t be able to fit it.
