Like I already mentioned, there are many ways to let people know about your services and business. Today, we are looking at just three: Google My Business, the BBB and Press Releases.

Ok so don’t be scared when I say “press releases”.  I get it.  They can seem scary and hard to do, but as we go through this you will see that they – just like most other things – really aren’t as hard as they sound. 

Google My Business

One of the first things that you want to do is create a Google My Business account when you first start your business. 

1 Have a Physical Location

You need to make sure that you have a physical location. If you have something like a P.O. Box, Google doesn’t tend to trust that you are who you say you are.  Too many scammers have used P.O. Boxes to trick real people with a fake business so Google tends to be wary.

The first thing that you need to do is get a physical location.  You can use something like your home address, but just understand that if you do your business’s online presence will tie back to your home.  That means that when you get weirdos who try to stake you they can find your home address easier. 

Yes I said “when you get weirdos” not “if”.  It is a guarantee that if you do enough business you will find freaks. 

2 Start the Registration Process

You can start the registration process, but GMB requires that your address be verified before your listing actually starts.  That means that if you open your doors on March 1st, a few weeks before that it would be smart to start registering your business with GMB.

Google will send you a paper that includes a code.  Go out to https://google.com/verifymybusiness to enter your verification code.  After you have done that, now Google knows you are who you say you are and you can fill out the information. 

3 Fill in EVERYTHING

When I say “everything”, I mean EVERYTHING.  Make sure you put as much information as you can possibly fill in.  You want to show Google that you mean business.

Better Business Bureau 

The BBB is a local nonprofit organization that gives you a listing on their website.  If you have a service based business – like plumber or electrician – this is the perfect place to register.  

When you register with the BBB, they vet your business to ensure that you are ethical and doing what you’re supposed to be doing.  Then they take the time to help you build a profile for your business.  Do the same thing that you did for GMB.  Make sure to fill in all the information about yourself. 

One small disclaimer is that the BBB does cost something, but when you pay the yearly fee, you get business coming in in a steady stream. 

Press Releases

The final thing that I just want to briefly touch on is a press release.  What exactly is a press release?  Well, when you send a press release, you are informing the news stations around your area of information that they might be interested in.  Basically you are filling a need. 

News stations have to have news.  That is the whole point of a “news” station.  As you can imagine, it can be hard sometimes to find news to share.  That is where you come in.  When you write a press release, you are basically handing the news station a ready to publish story about something.  This could be something like a charitable event that your company is putting on.  The story of how you are opening your first or second location.  Maybe it is something else.  

The point is that now you get two bonus points.  

  1. You just got news coverage and a backlink.  
  2. You gained some clout. 
    1. Now you can tell people on your website, “As seen on **NEWS STATION**”
