What is the Golden Ratio?

Many designers shy away from the concepts of the Golden Ratio because they fear them to be “too mathematical”.  Don’t let the word “ratio” scare you.  Today we are going to break down exactly what the golden ratio is and how you can use it in your designs. 

The definition given by wikipedia is…

“Two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities.” – Golden ratio 

Now after hearing a definition like that you may be saying, “What in the heck are you trying to show us today!?”  I DID say it isn’t complicated.  You just have to stop looking at mathematicians to understand it. 

Golden Ratio the Mathematical Definition

If you remember back to your college algebra class, you might (or might not) remember your professor telling you about infinite series and numbers.  Especially if you took discrete mathematics, you will remember these summation series. 

The golden ratio can be displayed mathematically in a lot of different ways.  It can be shown as a line, an infinite series, an infinite number sequence, an algebraic equation and even geometrically.  

The Fibonacci Sequence

If you remember back to your math classes, think about how a series is described. There is one specific sequence called the Fibonacci sequence that is intimately related to the golden ratio.

But really it will make a lot of sense if we simply show an example of the sequence.  

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, …

Do you see the pattern?

The next number in the sequence is the sum of the previous two numbers. That means that each value gets progressively bigger. 

The relationship between these numbers (especially when viewed in a geometric way) is where the golden ratio is derived.  More than that it is what makes the ratio so useful in Tulsa based website design. 

Golden Ratio Explained…Simply

The golden ratio is a mathematical equation that is found inside of nature everywhere, but it isn’t nearly as complex as that definition made it sound.  So enough with the math right?  

Here it is 1:1.618.  That is the ratio.  Look at the image of this shell above.  The sum of the previous two areas equals the third.  It continues and continues until you get this spiral.

You can use the number 1.618 to multiply width and height on fundamental design shapes like squares and rectangles to map out a design.
